• This image shows the Wicked Witch of the West commanding her flying monkeys in assault. • It was created by renowned comic book artist Alex Ross. • It was created as part of the Wizard of Oz traveling exhibit of interpretive art from important contemporary artists, commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Wizard of Oz film release. • The art show “Inspirations of Oz Fine Art Collection” featured 14 artists and was launched at Art Basel Miami in December 2008 then traveled through the US in 2009. • The original rendition of this image was chosen to be featured in the Wizard of Oz 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition book, released in fall 2009. The Wizard of Oz film was released in 1939 and was an instant success. It's lead actress Judy Garland was already becoming a star after being paired with Mickey Rooney, but the 16 year old was granted star status when she won an Academy Juvenile Award. The Wizard of Oz film was based on the same-titled book written by Frank L. Baum and published in 1900. Baum's creation heralded a series of thirteen books set in the land of Oz with other titles featuring characters other than Dorothy. In the classic movie The Wizard of Oz, the Wicked Witch, played by actress Margaret Hamilton, was stooped, green-skinned, and dressed entirely in black with a black pointed hat upon her head. This representation of the Wicked Witch has become an archetype for human wickedness | ||
