Calvin Hobbes Hot Chocolate & Hawkwoman

Well I have had time off sick this month so forgive my tardiness in getting this blog out, however it did give me time to re-visit some stuff and feed the 12 year old inside my head.
Calvin and Hobbes from front to back... check
Liberty Meadows overdose... check
lots of dvds ... check
Falling in love with Hawkwoman from Justice League Unlimited... check check check and check !
This blog entry is essentially about style
The Marvel style at the moment is bordering on the extreme realism to the dark & gritty with not a lot in between... So its a joy to see Mike Kunkle drawing Shazam over at DC comics or Skottie Young on Marvels version of OZ
This pleasure is what brings me round to the whole I'm in love with Hawkwomanl comment ....
I was glued to the screen I was really hooked, I sat and watched every episode of JLA Unlimited back to back... Twice!
The animation style that Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski had created under the watchfull gaze of Jean Mcurdy at Warner was unique and has since evolved into an artform of its own, one that is significantly different from the Manga and Disney style artwork that was growing elswhere in the genre. and it is good. Really good.
I remember being around the Warner Batman studios later on during the Batman Heart of Ice storyline and by that time the art had become really slick and sexy
but this recent evolution was a whole new ball game.
Somehow it has managed to capture and absorb other art styles especially in the case of Hawkwoman and Hawkman here you almost saw the intensity of Curt Swans Hawkman come to animated life and again in the new Gods storyline the backgrounds could have been drawn by Kirby himself yet they still managed to
fit perfectly into animation.
What really showed through was a great amount of understanding of the characters as well as respect for the history and creators of the original stories. Something that is slightly lacking in the Marvel offerings of late.
Check out this series guys its really worth the time and effort and check out some of the Warner / DC animation artwork here on the gallery website I can honestly say there was drool running down my chin when I saw the Superman vs Shazam production art from the JLA animated series
Just like I used to drool all over the racks of comic books with my pockets full of coins when i was a kid!
